I don't think there is an "ideal diet", but this is what I think is the basis for a healthy diet, as far as I'm concerned:
Protein from 'lean sources' such as chicken breast or tuna
Healthy fats from nuts, fish, avocados etc.
Complex carbs from oatmeal, muesli, potatoes etc.
Lots of varied vegetables
Fruit
Some of the principles I try to follow are:
- Eating every 2-3 hours
- Not drinking any calorie-containing drinks - only water, tea, coffee etc.
- Only eating simple carbs after exercise, where they are beneficial
