I totally agree with you and in fact animals
do experience pain. What we should not do however, is project our own experiences of it, and of our emotions on animals because to make such leaps is totally stretching it. We shouldn't even project what we feel on other humans because it's very presumptuous, not to mention subjective.
While humans and
some animals have similar nervous systems, we have different cerebral cortex's and we no doubt experience events differently. Mammals, of course, are closest to those of humans.
