With the mention of different culture than yours I must say you must visit Egypt (and if you did then please be my guest) as it is very normal here to let the kids with their grandfathers/mothers while parents are away.
Actually me and my wife did that when we were making Omrah (Visiting Mecca) in Saudi Arabia.
