Your past proves it is possible to remain friends. It's just this guy and friendship you are struggling with. What's different? Do you really want to be friends with him or are you not accepting that it is over and hope you will find each other again?
He has moved on, have you? Have you dated others?
BTW, I believe it is possible to remain friends, however I suggest you examine your motives.
