Try not to get too hung up on the choice of language. Words like
frequency, vibration, and
resonance are commonly used in I-M circles out of habit, but they don't share the original technical meanings. I don't know who first coined such word usage, but it stuck.
Science has its own language foibles anyway. Consider the word
atom for example -- hardly an accurate term for what it describes, but we're stuck with it out of habit.
