pray for the person,
surrender one's own will and (the life and care of) others health to higher wisdom/God;
stop trying to rescue others.

I've been down the route you were on, but it led to a dead end. By recontextualizing life and the human experience, it all makes a lot more sense now.
Perhaps some more active suggestions are to expose them to high spiritual energy sources, i.e. 12 step groups and the like. Just by committing to exposing themselves to that "aura"/influence will be beneficial, even if they don't believe in it.
