So now I'm in the situation where I might as well complete the course and get my degree as it is far too late to change, but I have a huge amount of difficult work to do, none of which interests me and which I am trying to learn on top of a very poor foundation. ie. I stumbled through the first two years so I don't feel that I know the basics well enough.

My doors were blown off when I read your post!

I was in a very similar position in college. Just like you mentioned...I forced myself to carry on, ride it out and get the degree. Extending your college stay if you change majors may seem like an eternity, however that time is going to pass regardless.

Looking back I wished I had changed! I ended up getting the degree and applying to dental school - only to get crushed in the interviewing process. I was in denial....continuing on a path...the wrong path because I was afraid to make a change. Ultimately the decision was made for me by not getting accepted into dental school.

Being rejected was actually a relief! Deep down I knew it wasn't my passion.

Your problem solving skills and all of the knowledge you have acquired along the way are always an asset.

When you find what you are passionate about you will be amazed how it doesn't feel life work. You may still be putting in some long hours, however the time will pass very quickly.

You will also notice that it isn't a struggle!

Good luck!....Life is a series of decisions and course corrections =)
