I'm not a New Yorker, but I've got friends there and have visited many times. There are definitely bad neighborhoods, but NYC is nothing like the crime-ridden, disgusting Hell-hole it was 25 or 30 years ago. Don't worry about the subways -- some aren't always clean, and you may see your share of wierdos, but I wouldn't fret about your safety. Just use common sense, keep an eye on your stuff, and don't walking around in rough neighborhoods.

The biggest issue for first time visitors to NYC seems to be not getting overwhelmed by the chaos -- people don't take kindly to gawking tourists obstructing the sidewalk. If you're from a large city, or have spent enough time in large cities, this won't apply to you.
