I've been thinking about this for a while. It's kind of a challenge for me.
I want to go to New York alone but never had the guts. So now I have a month off before school starts and I'm really thinking of going there for a couple of days and just not listen to my fears.
I want to go there without plans. I don't want to waste my time on all the tourist-stuff. I just want to roam the streets and see what the place is like.
Can someone recommend some nice hostels or something like that (cheap) in some nice neighborhood where I can go out on the street without getting killed?
I've never been to the states. What should I know except for tipping?
Some general tips would be just awesome. Should I stay out of the subway? etc.
