In addition to the legal questions, you should think about whether your grandpa could handle a situation where your ex might possibly get violent. People can react unpredictably when served restraining orders. I think the deputy is the way to go, or someone who is trained in handling these situations.
Anyhow, I congratulate you on leaving an abusive situation. It can be a very hard thing and requires great courage.
