Default Meditation for placating your emotions and getting you into Focus?

Hi All,

I've just been wondering if meditation could help in calming a person down and getting into control, one's various emotions like Anger,infatuation, depression, etc?

If it helps, that what are the ways in which one can meditate? Practising for how long will help?
