I love cycling. I do more of it in the summer though. Don't worry Lolly your fitness will definitely improve with time. I find that running brings fitness levels up faster but I enjoy cycling more.
As far as a shake, it depends what your goals are. If you want to lose weight then a high sugar drink or bar like lucozade wouldn't be something you would want as these carbs would fuel your session and not the fat on your body. In this case drink plenty of water beforehand or a protein shake.
If you don't want to lose weight and are in it just for increased fitness, then you can go ahead and take some lucozade or a fruit smoothie or something like that.
