i study what i love. it's much easier to do well in school when you are studying something that interests you.

i find that profs are much more apt to remember you and write you a good recommendation if you show that you are genuinely interested in the subject. i've never gotten straight A's, but i got into a top university. don't get straight A's here either, but all my profs know who i am.

awards are nice, but personal recs will get you where you want to go.
