Its good to know a mixture of kicks, punches, grappling etc
I hear krav maga is good, kali, jeet kune do.
For self defence they will need to contain strikes to vulnerable areas, e.g. eye jabs, throat, groin kicks etc
these are not permitted in mma although mma is great for learning correct punching/kicking techniques etc and of course takedown defence.
whatever you learn it wants to be practical and to the point
