Gandalf had to go on a quest (probably a Bear walk with Steve and Erin) before he was 1337 enough to summon giant eagles.
(If I remember correctly, technically that's not true since think Gandalf summoned eagles before he became 1337, but my fuzzy memory of that part of the movie serves my intention to make a jokey post so I'll pretend that I don't remember.)
Gandalf: if you're out there, please summon a giant eagle to fly me to Steve seminar. Thanks, man.
