I also experienced the cotton balls thing when I began to meditate. I think it’s the same as clearing the cobwebs or getting rid of all the fluff in order to do some serious work with meditating. The lighter side is fun but for real results we need to look at what we are getting and decide whether it’s important or not in order to move on to what is. Relaxation can be used for the more fun stuff - images and such. And keeping a notepad by you might be useful. Just a suggestion.
