If one is enraged by the state of the world, how does that equate to mere ego-gain via good works? Anger is not inherently egotistical, and when harnessed well it can reshape the landscape of the world. Of course, to be driven only by anger is egotistical. It is power that consumes the user and serves only to destroy. When it is directed willfully, or it is able to drive one's ambition only when allowed, it is a gift, still destructive but creatively so.
Perhaps your friend is a darkworker, but even neutral people can be consumed by their emotions. The difference between them is that fledgling darkworkers are quickly destroyed by their own feelings whereas neutral people never work up the intensity to be destroyed, or if they do it's a very slow process.
