Usually I try to look to the core intention behind a process and find a way to focus on that intention in a way that is natural for me.

What a good idea! I'll do that too. I already do it, I often modify techniques that I learn to make them more compatible with myself instead of following them exactly. But I'll focus on the energy/intention behind the process more consciously from now on.

I believe that a lot of people suggest psychic protection because, as Anna says, it makes them feel good on some level. Really, I think that feeling good is what it's about.

Yes, exactly. And since it doesn't make me feel good but rather bad, I just won't do it.
