Last but not least

Voodoo

LIKES
  • Reverence of ancestors, strong respect for forefathers and foremothers
  • Reconnect with West African roots
  • Reconnect with third world communities of Haiti and Latin America
  • Misunderstood, possible result of slavery (root for the underdog)
  • Aesthetics (bright colors of foods, each god has a brilliant color, food, and item)
  • Humanistic towards women (priests and priestesses equal, gods and goddesses equal, main god has a mother)
  • Friendly towards gays (Oshun is the patron saint of lesbians)
  • Would work well with Christianity (syncretism)

DISLIKES
  • Difficult to find community in the US
  • Hard to explain to people including many urban Africans, Haitians, and Latinos
  • Don't know as much about the religion as I ought if I'm going to be in it, would have to do a lot of research and interviewing to make sure I'm not being inaccurate
  • Difficult to find opportunities to practice it in the US
