It used to be, I imagine, that humans were able to survive the world exactly because of being more in the oneness world.

I believe this is how animals experience life. They might be living in the state of oneness all the time. We as humans developed a more sophisticated brain and therefore we have overriden this basic state of being. We developed a mind that separates things and attaches meaning. That is why we don't experience oneness all the time, because for us to live in a highly advanced society we must use our minds. If we would like to return to just "being" we would just do whatever is needed to survive. We would just sit on a park bench all day.
I personally don't want that because I want to achieve more. I want the ability to achieve and to do that I must using my mind. Oneness is a distraction. Achievement is what separates us from animals, it's what defines us as human beings.
There is an excellent article that explains what I'm trying to say. It explains the upside and the downside of our minds. Why we don't experience oneness on a daily basis.
