I propose Steve conduct a 30-day trial of using
Couchsurfing.com.
Actually it was on this forum that I originally learned about this beautiful community. If you're not familiar with it, it's a community of people who offer up their couch for travellers to sleep on (though many times you get a bed). You can host a traveller or surf on someone else's couch while travelling, and it's very safe because it's built on a karma system. Not only do you need to fill out a profile which explains what kind of person you are, but whenever you host or surf you write a reference for that person. So, the practical upshot of which is, when you're searching for a place to couchsurf you can read references that other people have left a person and see what kind of person they really are. This karma system works
incredibly well.
Whether Steve primarily surfs at other people's places or hosts is completely up to him, but in my experience this community has exemplified
Oneness more than any other community I've ever interacted with. And this system isn't limited to single-person travellers. May hosts actually prefer having a family visit for a few days... you'll really need to sign up and fill out a profile to really experience the magic of it.
As Steve says, you can't fully appreciate something looking from the outside in, you need to be on the inside to know the reality. Did I mention using the site is 100% free?
C'mon Steve, take this opportunity to change the world even more and try this!
p.s. there is a huge vegan/vegetarian community on CS too. at the very least, hosting is also an fantastic experience.
