Listing to various Podcasts that teach you something. It is similar to reading books but not as energy consuming.
In addition you can multitask and hear the Podcast at the same time you play your computer games.

I also favor Go over chess like Chris_1977, and find it produces useful knowledge. Its similar to poetry. Most of the time you don't get practical knowledge but from time to time you get some insights into your own character.
I know someone who is stuck at his playing strength in Go because she can't deal with her fear of losing something.
Such problems become visible on the Goban, it gives you a different way to look at fundamental things like the flow of black and white, fear and greed.

I haven't personally played chess at a higher level so I can't comment on its usefullness.

In addition the brain develops when it is used. Playing Go or Chess uses the brain.
