Default Work as a freelance programmer/writer better than summer job?

Hey guys I am finishing up my sophomore year as a computer engineering major. I really want to make some money this summer, but unfortunately I live in a small town and I'm guessing at best I could get a minimum wage job delivering pizzas or something. I'd love to continue developing my programming/writing skills, so I'm considering trying to do some freelance work. Has anybody done this? How hard/competitive is it? Worst case scenario, would I make the equivalent of a minimum wage job?

Thanks
Erock
