Does anyone know of these "authorities on reading"? It's interesting to read in one book how it's possible to achieve 2,000WPM, then in the same night pick up a different book and read that it's impossible to read over 800.
I would think that the eyes don't actually process words at all.
I think the 800wpm number was the maximum of "sound language".
If you define reading as having the sound of the words in your head you get such a limit.

But it is impossible to calculate a speedlimit for reading without subvocalisation.

You can only say person XY has only reached XX wpm.
