As a religion-hater, I find myself defending religion more often than I have the opportunity to denounce it. This said, it's a grand presumption that religion is a required conduit to seeing beautiful thoughts about man and the universe.

Most religious persons are equally, if not more, ignorant of other religions. How many Jews are enthusiasts of the Greek mythos? How many Buddhists have studied the Kabbalah? How many Christians have investigated Tantrism? They're all missing some "beautiful thoughts": why do you not consider the blind, too?

Scenario: someone is holding a gun to your head. Is it ethical to kill them? Every instance of jurisprudence I know of, excepting pacifist religions like Jainism, say yes.
