For reading, I love history and biography. There's a lot of value in pondering the past, why things happened the way they did, how it could have been different, how people have reacted to stressors in different times or different cultures.

There's a very good new-ish book called "The River of Doubt" by Candice Millard about Theodore Roosevelt's 1912 trip down an uncharted river in the Amazon that is one of the most harrowing, and interesting, adventures I've read in a long time. I'm also in the midst of an ongoing love affair with "Team of Rivals" by Doris Kearns Goodwin, on Abraham Lincoln and his Cabinet. Both are extremely thought-provoking.
