Interesting point. I think that you may be interested in Richard Dawkins' "The Selfish Gene", which was the origin of the memetic theory. I haven't read it myself, and there have been a number of criticisms of his theory (non well-founded enough for me to pay much attention), and there are alternate theories, but!
