QWERTY was designed to be inefficient to prevent the levers/arms of typewriters from jamming together when people typed quickly. With a QWERTY layout, many of the words we type most require awkward movements.... only because they're familiar, we don't always realize how awkward they are. What I did notice was this: When I did a lot of typing on a QWERTY layout, my hand joints got sore.
I switched to Dvorak because of my discomfort, and I wanted to compare the two layouts. Now that I'm familiar with it, it's much faster and it's obviously more efficient. Since the most commonly used letters are in the home row, I can type a lot of words with very little hand movement. That means it's more comfortable and easier on my hand joints than QWERTY. By far.
