Sometimes it is amazing. It seems to help,for myself anyway, to greatly exaggerate the effect I seek. For instance, instead of just seeing someone as "happy", I visualize them being completely giddy, overwhelmed with happiness. This will work for yourself as well.
There are a few times in my life that really stand out in happiness, as well as times that were exciting, or sensual, or prosperous...pretty much anything you could think of. I use the memories of those times to "re-create" the state I was in, concentrating heavily on the feelings that I expect whatever my current project is to produce when they occur. This can be enhanced by using anchors (NLP) elicit the feelings.
