The powerful people I associate with respect a person who is comfortable enough to be at ease in their presence.
In general, a 'formal' manner may come off as stilted and put people at unease. Be friendly, be courteous, and ask a person open ended questions.
Keep your opinions to a minimum, and be openly positive. A degree of playfulness (not sillyness) is often appropriate.
Remember: People may not remember what you say or do. But they will usually remember how you made them feel.
