I'm just going through the Make Your Links Work e-book and you're right, it says that DMOZ can take 3-6 months to accept your site, so you should not monetize before then. The logic is that your SBI site is still young during the first 6 months, and you should focus on building content and traffic instead of income streams. Then it says, a month after you're accepted in DMOZ, start your monetization program.

Although I began monetizing after 4 months I'd still really like a response from DMOZ about my submission. If it's rejected - tell me why! Seems a weird policy to reject sites that contain adverts if they still have heaps of quality content; many DMOZ listings are actually like this.

OK I must stop trying to analyze this now! DMOZ will always be an enigma to me.
