Opportunities are the things that are valuable.

It one thing to use the opportunity of someone writing you to get one of your articles to be reprinted and it's another thing to pay the opportunity cost of going out to look for someone to publish ones articles.

I think that it might be a mistake to pay those opportunity costs.

If you criticise a strategy that someone follows by suggesting that the person does something different it's worth discussing whether that suggestion is good or bad.
Thinking in terms of strategy (and opportunity costs) means that I react differently to ideas like this then most people and might seem protective to you.
