And I don't think all manipulation is bad. If you can influence people to take more responsibility for their lives, that's fine by me. We might call it "benign manipulation". Quite often the people who are good at motivating others know how to push the right buttons, while those on the receiving end enjoy the benefits of having their buttons pushed without always understanding immediately what's going on.
