Working for someone vs being self employed: these are both "jobs". You have to earn a living somehow. If you're self-employed, you won't have one boss but you will have clients who will act like bosses. That's just the way it is.
Working for someone vs self employed: either way you need the education/skills to do the profession you desire. This depends on the career path you choose. There is nothing inherently wrong from furthering your education.
