If you're in the US, go to Weather Underground. Type in your city and state and hit enter. Scroll down the left side. Beneath the moon phases, click on "View Full Star Chart".

Once you see the star chart, on the right uncheck all the boxes except "Planets", "Star Names", and "Skyline". Go below that and click the direction you want to look - north, south, east, west or straight up. You should be able to figure out what you're seeing from that unless it's a manmade satellite. At the bottom you can set it for any date or time. You can click on any star or planet to get scientific info.

I'm sure there are other sites where you can do the same thing for other countries.
