Edit: To elaborate on what I mean, it's that he "tried to get the cat on his good side.". You don't try to get a cat on your good side. You respect the cat, and the cat will be ok with you. If he's not willing to respect your cat enough, then that bodes bad for how he'll deal with you later on.
