It will, but to a lesser extent. Any time your body's use for energy exceeds it's intake it will burn up stored energy, fat.
There seems to be a completely new level when you fast however. Your digestion shuts down completely after a few days and your body goes through a massive cleansing. Your digestion takes up much of the body's energies, so with it off, the liver and kidneys can concentrate on getting rid of year of built up junk.
You may be able to still be active on a complete fast, but highly unlikely. Other people have reported being extremely tired and lethargic while fasting, so taht would be a hinderance. You could just start fasting for one day per month, or per week. Even fasting for that small amount of time helps the body greatly.
