The other housemates were picky about the other subletters, and did not approve of any of them.
So, legally it is person As responsibility, and person B gave advance notice and did the necessary work to find another subletter. Although it is not legally their responsibility, and perhaps not morally either, person B might offer the rent anyways for reasons of friendship, if that is important in such a case.
