I think scientists are by their nature agnostic about everything. They tend to hold beliefs, I think, as probabilities rather than certainties. So to a person of science, a "may be" can mean anything ranging from "this is so likely as to be a wholehearted belief on my part" to "this likelihood of this is so small as to be inconsequential, and I don't operate in the world as if it were so, and yet there is still a very tiny chance that it is so."
Because of that range, I too luv it when scientists (people) say "may be" this or that. It's like a gift of freedom that they are giving to me.
