Like another poster pointed out, we've read hundreds of Steve's articles, listened to his podcasts, chatted with him on the forums, read his book etc.
People have more reason to legitimately believe they have a feel for what Steve's like than they do, say Paris Hilton or Britney Spears.
He's kind of in the overlap between the famous and personal acquaintance spheres.
