There is a device called "medjem" that many doctors, physical therapists, and gyms have. It looks like a breathlyzer and works in a similar way. You sit in a chair for 15 min and breathe into it. At the end of that time it tells you how many calories you would need if you did nothing but wake up and sit still in a chair every day ( your basal metabolic rate ).
You want to eat more calories than that, but this will give you a good perspective on what is high and low calorie for you.
For instance, if you basal metabolic rate is about 1800 calories a day, and you pretty much sit in an office all day, do you really want to spend 400 - 600 calories eating a plain bagel someone put out in the office kitchen?
