I think we touched on this in another thread or I touched on this in a blog entry, but you can still communicate with the higher self of the deceased person who remains in the ether even while the next incarnation is going on.

When I first encounter a deceased relative, the come out of the ether looking all luminescent. Then they sort of coalesce into the form they were in when alive so the person I'm reading for will recognize them.
