I taught myself about 22 years ago on an old 'steam powered' (non-electric) typewriter using a moldy old 1950's era 'teach yourself to type' tutorial. I picked both up for about 10 dollars at a yard sale, and started hammering away. I never have timed myself, and have fallen out of practice, so I probably don't use optimal technique or fingering by any means.


One thing that I have never understood is that why some people use the 'caps lock' instead of the 'shift' key. On my old machine, I had to jam the caps lock key down with a good deal of force to get it to work, so I never got into the habit of using it. I acutally had one 'IT specialist' ask me why I didn't use the caps lock for upper case letters when I entered my password. He says he never saw anybody not use it...
