Sometimes it's scared people who feel validated in their fear if they can get someone else to worry along with them. For others it's a definite love of bringing people down, either to make themselves feel better about their own situation or to make themselves feel like they have power. This last one is usually unconscious and will be quickly dismissed by that person claiming they say what they say because they're smart.
I know an Internet group of people who are smart, enthusiastic, cultured, diverse, and full of humor. They're also convinced we're all going to hell in a handbasket and there's nothing we can do about it.
I don't read their forum so much anymore. Wish 'em well, but....
