My personal mix...
For studying/reading/having in the background, to keep me alert, but doesn't distract me:
Bach or similar.
For getting psyched up, or doing a workout (if I walk with this in my ipod I'll just end up walking at a cardio pace then running):
The band "Disturbed" especially the songs "Ten Thousand Fists", "Down With The Sickness" and "Indestructible".
I DON'T listen to sad, sappy songs if I want to have energy. They put my brain into a daydreaming space. They're ok if I need to be in a space to just chill out.
I listen to newer music while trying to get stuff done. I prefer not to listen to songs with too much nostalgia content if I'm trying to make things happen. I don't want to muddy up my concentration with daydreaming about the associations brought up by "oldies".
