The division is purely arbitrary; one could reverse the associations of "I" and "ego" very easily, saying that I am holding the ego down instead of vice versa. It's fruitless to judge either as good or bad because as you say, how would you know the difference?

The concept of "I" to which I am referring is the whole mind, body thing, and the ego is a just a concept of the mind. I can exist independantly of ego but can ego exist independantly of me?
