Americans eat far too much protein. I don't know of a single reported case of a person suffering from a dietary protein deficiency in America. Protein is also not a meat-only thing; it's present in legumes, vegetables, and plenty of other non-meat sources.
If you were feeling tired or unsatisfied by lots of carbs, it may have simply been the glycemic index of the food causing your "hunger" swings.
