I think I can answer my own question on how to keep motivation high. Remember why you're attempting the goal in the first place. Perhaps have something related to your goal nearby.

Learn 20 characters: DONE

I'm not always getting them right first time in Anki, but I'm not doing badly either. I think I can do this.
