Oregon is the only state I know about that doesn't use fluoride in it's municipal water supply. I've often wondered how that effects the state's culture. Portland, for example, is one of the most politically active big cities in the country. All kinds of things have been pioneered here (ie; widespread cycling as transit, the urban growth boundary, etc). Many people here think for themselves, and it isn't just progressive leftist stuff although that is the general culture of Portland. In rural Oregon there is a strong libertarian streak. There are actually many clashes about things like the urban growth boundary between land use regulator and property rights advocates.

Then again it could just be a big coincidence and the only real difference is that Californians make fun of our "bad" teeth.
