Last I checked Wikipedia, or perhaps it was the Wiki library (or whatever it's called), offered short stories available in Japanese. There is also a book or two on Amazon you can buy which are designed to actually teach Japanese through the use of Japanese short-stories.

I don't know if Essential Kanji covers all the jouyou kanji, but if it doesn't, then I recommend Remembering the Kanji Vol. 1. Best of luck.
